Wyoming has a great asset, you can walk to places! So, in the context of our clothing/shopping unit, I took my small 8th grade class to the nearby shop “Independent You” and asked them to browse clothing and accessories, ask for price, and provide opinions (Interpersonal). At first they were very shy and hesitant to speak. But soon the girls were rolling, trying on rings and necklaces, asking friends what they thought and commenting about the price. It did not work as well with boys… I had asked them to pretend looking for a gift for their moms but they just did not really care for it. Too bad there is no sports gear shop in Wyoming.
So I am going to call this experiment “GOOD TRY” for bringing real life to class (and vice et versa).
